Tour of the Reconstruction Era Campus
In the fall of 1873 the University of South Carolina was desegregated — the first Black student, Henry Hayne, enrolled in October and the first Black professor, Richard T. Greener, arrived on campus in November. A year later the Normal School for training teachers, mostly Black women, opened in Rutledge College. By the 1875 the majority of students were African American. This ended in 1877 when the state shuttered the University and it wouldn’t reopen until 1880 and wouldn’t admit Black students again until 1963. What was life like at the University of South Carolina during this period of Reconstruction? Come on a tour of the Reconstruction-era University to find out. The tour will be led by students in my course, EDHE 730, "History of Higher Education in America" as part of their course. You can register for the tour here. |
